Covid-19 short for “Coronavirus Disease 2019,” is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and quickly spread globally, leading to a pandemic declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. Covid-19 is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and it can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. Symptoms of Covid-19 can range from mild to severe and include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, loss of taste or smell, and in severe cases, pneumonia and organ failure. Older adults and those with underlying health conditions are at higher risk of developing severe illness or complications. Efforts to control the spread of Covid-19 include vaccination campaigns, wearing masks, practicing hand hygiene, social distancing, and implementing lockdowns or restrictions on gatherings and travel. Covid-19 has had profound impacts on public health, economies, and societies worldwide, leading to widespread disruptions and efforts to mitigate its effects through healthcare interventions and vaccination efforts.
